Lets Rock!
When I left CSI:Halifax in 2017, to concentrate on guitar with Musica Kirklees and avoid major roadwork disruption on travelling back to Halifax, I wanted to explore singing with other groups. I certainly hadn’t planned on joining The Awesome Choir of Rock (ACOR) at Ricky’s Rock School in Linthwaite. Till 2018 it had been an all-female choir but then became mixed voice and I braved becoming the first man to join.
Laura Morrell, the brilliant choral director, had also recently joined but now had the added challenge of arranging for Bass voice! Between then and my last session with them in 2020 we peaked at a whopping four male voices!
When Laura left Ricky’s in 2019 the talented Lizzie Joy Ross became lead and was really coming into her own with the choir when the pandemic struck.
With a reasonably liberal definition of ‘Rock’ the repertoire was another huge contrast to the parallel folk centred Singing for Fun group that I had joined in 2017. We covered everything from Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus) thought Zombie (The Cranberries) and on to The Monster Mash (Bobby Pickett).

Marshfest – August 2018
My first concert with ACOR was at Marshfest 2018 held at the Huddersfield Ukranian Club. Sadly we couldn’t sing outside as the weather let us down.
Our set included:
- Mr Brightside (The Killers)
- I love Rock N Roll (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts)
- American Idiot (Greenday)
- You Give Love a Bad Name (Bon Jovi)
